Protein-based therapeutics (Biopharmaceuticals) is emerging as an important class of pharma products and are the fastest-growing segment of the pharmaceutical industry. The higher-order structure (HOS) of Biopharmaceuticals is a critical quality attribute that could affect the therapeutic efficacy and safety of these drugs. There is a growing need to prolong the stability of these drugs in high protein concentrations in the liquid or in suspension form. However, not many techniques can assess the structural attributes in their formulation state. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the few powerful techniques that can enable the measurement of biopharmaceuticals structure and aggregation states to assess the drug quality and comparability in the formulation state. Additionally, NMR offers a highly sensitive fingerprinting approach for assessing conformational changes of biomolecules.
During this talk, Dr. Ashutosh Kumar, Professor from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, IIT Bombay, Mumbai, will cover the exposition of high-resolution NMR techniques to understand the HOS of Biopharmaceuticals in their formulated states. Furthers, results obtained from the NMR spectra can be used to establish various similarity metrics for developing and assessing the biosimilarity of quality assurance or control.
