Prof. Anita Maguire

Anita Maguire undertook undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Chemistry at UCC (B.Sc. 1985, Ph.D. 1989). Following postdoctoral research first at Namur, Belgium then at the University of Exeter, UK she returned to the Department of Chemistry in UCC in 1991, initially as a College Lecturer, then Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry in 2002, and was appointed in 2004 to the newly-established Chair of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, jointly in the Department of Chemistry and the School of Pharmacy, playing a leading role in development of the School of Pharmacy in recent years. Since her appointment at UCC she has played a strategic role in the development of teaching and learning, including the introduction of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at undergraduate level for the first time.
Over the past 30 years at UCC she has led an active research team focusing on synthetic organic and pharmaceutical chemistry, which interacts extensively with the pharmaceutical sector in Ireland and internationally. She is very committed to postgraduate education, ensuring the research students gain the skills required to underpin their future careers; 54 PhD and 6 MSc students have graduated from her research team since 1997, most of whom have developed careers within the pharmaceutical industry both in Ireland and internationally. In addition over 45 Postdoctoral Researchers have worked within the team, many of whom have progressed to careers in industry.
Dr. David Foley
Principal Scientist, Small Molecule Analytical Research and Development, Merck
David Foley received his PhD in organic chemistry from University College Cork, under the supervision of Prof. Anita Maguire. He then moved to the US, and conducted an industrial Postdoc at Lilly in Indianapolis where he developed flow NMR applications for reaction mechanism understanding. In 2011 he moved to Pfizer in Groton CT where he continued to advance the field of NMR reaction monitoring in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2017 he took on increased responsibilities as leader of the Structure Elucidation Group at Pfizer. In June 2021, he made the move to Small Molecule Analytical Research and Development at Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, NJ, USA, where he is currently the analytical chemistry lead for a number of early and late phase programs.
Dr. Pat O'Neill
Chemistry Team Leader, Process Development Centre, Pfizer
Pat is the Chemistry Team Leader in the Pfizer Process Development Centre where he has been employed since 2004. The main remit of the PDC is the development of second generation API manufacturing processes when justified.
Prior to Pfizer, Pat worked in Schering-Plough as a research scientist and at a generic API manufacturing company at the start of his career, and has seen the entire gamut of API small molecule manufacturing.
Kevin O'Sullivan
Analytical Chemist, QCL Characterization, Eli Lilly
Kevin joined Lilly Kinsale in 2000. He has held a number of roles within the QCL department during this time. For the last 5 years he has been working as an Analytical Chemist within the Characterisation group. A primary focus as part of this role is the maintenance and development of NMR capabilities at Lilly Kinsale.
Dr. Ross Driver
Development Chemist, Pharmaceutical Development Services, Thermo Fisher Scientific
Ross completed his PhD and postdoctorate studies at Maynooth University, Co. Kildare with a focus on asymmetric organocatalytic transformations. Following this, he spent two years as a synthetic chemist in the research and fine chemicals custom synthesis field as part of Toronto Research Chemicals (now part of the LGC group). Following his return to Ireland, Ross joined Thermo Fisher Scientific as a development chemist at the Curraghbinny site. This role sees Ross working on early and late stage development projects for clinical and commercial manufacture of bulk API across a wide area of therapeutic use. Ross has extensive experience in the use of NMR for the structural elucidation of reaction products and impurities, reaction monitoring, REACH registration and reference standard qualification.
Anna Codina, Ph.D.
Senior Director Strategy and Business Development, SciY
Anna has a degree in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Protein NMR from the University of Barcelona, Spain. She undertook her post-doc in protein NMR at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, and following that worked in the Analytical R&D department of Pfizer for seven years, becoming proficient in low level impurity structure elucidation, reaction monitoring, qNMR and the preparation of regulatory documentation. She received a Pfizer Worldwide Achievement Award for the implementation of reaction monitoring by NMR in an open access environment.
She joined Bruker in 2011 and had different roles since including Material Characterisation Laboratory Manager, Product Portfolio Manager and for several years was in charge of driving the Biopharmaceutical business at Bruker BioSpin. Anna recently moved to SciY as Senior Director of Strategy and Business Development.
