Wastewater monitoring requires the rapid analysis of many trace metals to prevent pollution of the environment. With the S4 T-STAR a wide range of elements (e.g. Ti, Cr, V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb) can be quantified within 30 minutes after sampling, a process that includes sample preparation with an internal standard, homogenization, transfer to a sample carrier, drying and measurements using a range of measurement conditions.
In the example given here, the S4 T-STAR finishes the complete analysis of the required elements Ti, Cr, V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As and Pb within 17 minutes. For highest sensitivity, an automatic tube adjustment control procedure can be implemented in the analytical routine after change to the excitation conditions, followed by a longer measurement of 15 min. In that case, the complete analytical procedure is finished within 42 minutes.
The detection limits for elements measured with Mo excitation are typically below 15 ppb (for a measurement time 100 s). With longer measurement times, the detection limits can be improved to <5 ppb. Measurements with W excitation achieve detection limits below 200 ppb (for a measurement time 600 s).
