The ER 4116DM resonator is specifically designed for anisotropic studies of triplets, biradicals, and of transition metal and rare earth ions containing "forbidden" fine structures or hyperfine structure transitions. When the magnetic field B0 is parallel to a principle axis, the ESR ΔMs=±2 transition probability drops to zero with B1 perpendicular B0 (perpendicular polarization), while it is largest with B1 parallel B0 (parallel polarization).
The resonance frequencies of the empty probehead are at 9.8 and 9.9 GHz for the perpendicular (TE102) and parallel (TE012) microwave modes, respectively. When using a standard quartz dewar insert for variable temperature experiments (helium or nitrogen), the resonance frequencies are 9.6 GHz for the perpendicular and 9.4 GHz for the parallel B1 pattern.
