Functional regeneration of complex large-scaled defects requires both soft and hard tissue grafts. Autologous tissue-harvest, considered as the standard of care in clinical settings, possess major procedural drawbacks. By employing a tissue engineering approach based on biological tissue constructs, Dr. Redenski has fabricated composite tissue flaps by combining synthetic soft-tissue matrices and biological bone matrix. In their models high-resolution microCT was used, both ex vivo and in vivo, to evaluate vascular development and bone turnover.
