Protective windows, also known as "thin film", is commonly used to protect the detector and other internal parts of a handheld XRF analyzer from dust and debris. Typical window materials include Ultralene™ and Kapton™. If an analyzer has vacuum capability, then gridded windows are offered to add strength to the windows so that the vacuum does not rupture the the window film.
