In this research highlight, Dr. David Martinez-Martin discusses his creation and use of different nanotechnologies and techniques, including atomic force microscopy, to explore biological and physical structures across all scales. He regularly collaborates with multidisciplinary stakeholders from the University of Syndey, industry, and Bruker to address a broad range of topics. His research and discoveries have earned him several notable awards, most recently the Finalist Alliance Award from the American Chamber of Commerce in 2024.
“Society is facing significant challenges, and I believe that in order to address those challenges, we need more innovative development. This can be achieved by having genuine collaborations between different stakeholders, particularly between industry and academia.”
ABOUT THE RESEARCHER:
Dr. David Martinez-Martin is Deputy Director of Sydney Microscopy & Microanalysis and Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Sydney.
FIELD OF STUDY:
Dr. David Martinez-Martin’s research is focused on creating, applying, and translating new technologies to investigate how physical properties give rise to biological functions or behaviors in materials. He is also the Deputy Director of the Sydney Microscopy & Microanalysis facility which lets researchers explore physical and biological structures at the micro, nano, and atomic scales with novel instrumentation and technical expertise.
