The environmental monitoring system EM 27 is an open path Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer, designed and optimized for remote sensing of chemical substances in the atmosphere. With its high sensitivity, mechanical stability, and speed, the system is ideally suited for a wide range of applications. These applications encompass industrial air quality monitoring, like emission measurements of smokestacks. Furthermore, the system excels in academic research, particularly in measuring emissions from volcanoes and wildfires. It is also highly effective for the first responders to remotely detect hazardous compounds.
An internal calibration source provides automated radiometric calibration. The system is hardened for field operations in harsh environments and is capable of real-time measurements and analysis on site. With its proven Bruker RockSolidTM interferometer and the novel design of its sensor module the system is resistant to mechanical shocks and vibrations.
When used in passive mode, EM 27 uses thermal radiation emitted from background objects behind the gas clouds or from the gas compounds themselves as the light source for measuring the absorption or emission spectra of the target compounds. Therefore, EM 27 does not need any artificial light sources or reflecting surfaces. This mode allows the user to measure in any direction they choose.
EM 27 can also be equipped with an external active light source as an option. In this active configuration, the system is directed towards the light source, resulting in a well-defined path length between the spectrometer and the light source. In this setup, the concentration of gas compounds can be quantified, and the detection limits are further reduced.
The design of EM 27 is optimized for emission measurements. It has high optical throughput and low noise which leads to low detection limits of target compounds. This ultra-high sensitivity enables EM 27 to even identify gas clouds with concentrations of only a few ppm. Additionally, it enables the detection of gas clouds even when located over 5 km away from the system.
EM 27 uses the dedicated software OPUS RS/E to control the system, perform measurements, and analyze the data automatically. The software is easy-to-use and optimized for quick handling. No calibration to target gas is necessary, and the radiometric calibration and compensation of atmospheric gases are performed automatically. It is not necessary to perform any background measurement.
The standard library of EM 27 contains more than 40 compounds for real-time identification. Additionally, Bruker offers an optional extended library of more than 400 compounds for spectral library search during post-analysis.
