Spatial context is key to differentiating contributions from different cell phenotypes when studying molecular expression in tissues but is lost during typical Omics analyses. Newer untargeted molecular imaging techniques provide spatial context while expanding discovery studies to non-traditional molecular classes such as lipids and metabolites. This offers new perspectives into cellular biochemistry that were previously unachievable and are well suited for studying the millions of tissues residing in tissue banks worldwide.
